Glass Basket Andre Thuret C 1930

$ 950

Courtesy of Formative Modern

A sculptural, handled glass bowl by André Thuret (1898-1965), a French glass artist who began his career as a chemist. Thuret’s scientific experiments explored the molecular change in the heating and cooling of glass, which eventually led him to create his own glass pieces in 1923. Thuret created biomorphic, fluid forms of clear, thick glass that captured the molten movement of the medium —a stark departure from the delicate and dainty glassware being produced at the time. Eventually, Thuret went on to collaborate with famed glass sculptor Henri Navarre, who was also in the early stages of his career, making his first contributions alongside him to the Paris Salon d’Automne in 1928 and showing there every year thereafter. For Thuret, each creation was a new experiment and, as each was executed by hand, no two are exactly alike. This bowl is from the early stages of Thuret’s career, when he worked primarily with pure, uncolored glass. The underside is etched with “marquise de sevigne - andre thuret.”
