A pair of stoneware tiles designed by Peter Behrens for Villeroy & Boch, Germany. Peter Behrens (1868-1940) was an architect and industrial designer who played an influential role in the development of the modernist movement in Germany in the first half of the 20th century. Behrens departed from Art Nouveau towards more abstract and geometric forms, helping to form the German Werkbund, a precursor to the Bauhaus. Between 1907-1912, Behrens took on a number of young architects as assistants who would later go on to change the course of design history: Walter Gropius, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Le Corbusier.
